Fluffy Tom arrived at the sanctuary at around 11 years old after being labelled a “trouble maker” in his neighbourhood. Undesexed and constantly fighting with other tomcats, he had earned quite the reputation for himself. When he first came to us, he was battered and weary, with an injured ear, a damaged eye, and several abscesses from years of surviving on the streets.
Despite being described as a cat who should be “put down,” it was clear from the moment he arrived that Fluffy Tom was simply a big, handsome grey and white boy who had never been given the care he needed. Once desexed and treated for his injuries, he settled into sanctuary life beautifully.
Over time, Fluffy Tom transformed into one of the sanctuary’s most loved residents and even became the face of The NZ Cat Foundation website. We later welcomed his daughter, Poppy, into the sanctuary as well, and the two shared a close bond, often found curled up together.
Although he could still be a little bossy at times, Fluffy Tom gradually softened and became an affectionate, gentle companion. He eventually moved into “The Palace,” where he happily accepted the peaceful leadership of another sanctuary cat, Nudger, and spent his later years surrounded by comfort, safety, and love.
Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Fluffy Tom a few years ago, but his larger-than-life personality and sweet nature are still deeply missed by everyone at the sanctuary.
