Fluffy Tom
I'll admit it... I wasn't exactly popular in my neighbourhood.
Everyone knew me as the big, undesexed tomcat who was always getting into fights. I suppose when you're trying to survive on the streets, you learn to look tough. By the time I arrived at the sanctuary, I was about 11 years old, exhausted from years of looking after myself. My ear was injured, one of my eyes had been damaged, and I was covered in painful abscesses from far too many battles.
Some people thought I was beyond saving.
But the wonderful people at the sanctuary saw something different. They didn't see a troublemaker. They saw a handsome grey and white boy who had simply never been given the chance to live a better life.
Once I was desexed and my injuries were treated, everything changed. It turned out I quite liked having regular meals, a warm bed, and people who cared about me. I discovered I didn't have to fight anymore.
Before long, I became one of the sanctuary's best-known residents. Imagine my surprise when I was chosen to be the face of The NZ Cat Foundation's website! Not bad for a cat who had once been written off.
One of the happiest moments of my life was when my daughter, Poppy, came to live at the sanctuary too. We spent countless hours curled up together, enjoying the peaceful life we'd both found.
I could still be a little bossy now and then - old habits die hard - but I became much gentler as the years passed. I eventually moved into The Palace, where I happily accepted that another cat named Nudger was in charge. It was a pretty good arrangement, really. I got to spend my days relaxing in comfort, surrounded by friends and people who loved me.
My time at the sanctuary came to an end a few years ago, but I hope people remember me for who I truly was—not the scruffy old street fighter who first arrived, but the gentle, fluffy boy who finally found peace.
Every cat deserves the chance to rewrite their story. I'm so grateful I got to rewrite mine.
