Chubby Chops & Cup Cake

Many years ago we were asked by another rescue group to help care for around 24 cats that had been living at the old Southdown Freezing Works. The original plan was for them to stay with us for about six months while another sanctuary was arranged, but as time went by those plans changed. In the end, we felt it was far kinder and less stressful for the cats to simply remain here with us permanently.

Over the years many of those cats passed away, but one very special boy remained — Smoochie, lovingly known as Chubby Chops.

Later in life Chubby’s health began to decline and he was diagnosed with kidney failure, followed shortly after by diabetes. We were advised that euthanasia would be the kindest option, but instead we brought him into the house and began intensive care. He received twice-daily insulin injections and regular trips for subcutaneous fluids every few days. After about a month, this brave little man improved dramatically and no longer needed the fluids at all.

The most beautiful part of Chubby’s story was the incredible friendship he formed with another rescue boy, Cupcake. Cupcake had come to us after a young girl had been feeding him behind her flat, but sadly her landlord would not allow him to stay. He too suffered from dental problems and was later diagnosed with diabetes.

These two gentle boys became inseparable. Their friendship was something truly special — always together, comforting each other, and bringing so much joy to everyone around them. Watching the bond between Chubby Chops and Cupcake was incredibly heartwarming, and they will both always be remembered with so much love.
