Our sanctuary is based in Huapai, Auckland and we need regular volunteers to help with routine chores so our cats can enjoy happy, healthy, safe lives.  We are looking for volunteers who are mature, have sense of responsibility, who are good team players and dedicated animal lovers.

Helping at the sanctuary is a popular way to fulfil community service hours for Duke of Edinburgh, St John's, Scouts, Guides, church, university, animal sciences studies, etc. We are happy to sign off on your hours and provide any needed verification of your service.

Daily duties include:

  • Serving and distributing food/water
  • Washing dishes
  • Cleaning litter trays and sand boxes
  • General cleaning duties – sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces
  • Changing bedding
  • And of course lots and LOTS of cat cuddles!

Volunteer hours are flexible, but our shifts generally run as follows, 7 days a week:

Morning: 8:30am – 11:00am
Afternoon: 4:30pm – 6:30pm

We are happy to have children volunteer as long as they are accompanied by an adult.  Responsible teenagers 12+ are able to volunteer without adult supervision, by prior arrangement.

Please use this contact form to enquire about volunteering only. For all other enquiries click here.

What our volunteers say:

"What I find most rewarding (aside from the love, purrs and cuddles) is when a timid cat gradually learns to trust you and you see them gaining confidence enough to come to you. I'm not in a position at the moment to have my own cats so looking after the cats here is the next best thing."
Tina

"Why do I volunteer? Are you kidding? I get to hang out with cats for hours, what's not to love?"
Micaela

"I wanted to volunteer at an animal shelter but it had to be a "no kill" environment. So I started volunteering at NZCF in 2016 and have fallen in love with the cats there (even though I have 6 myself). I have also met some wonderful people. The Sanctuary is always looking at ways to improve systems and facilities (where finances allow) and their priority is the health and well-being of the cats."
Toni

"Volunteering during my university breaks is rewarding, fulfilling and a lot of fun!"
Cameron

"Volunteering at the cat sanctuary let's me be the crazy cat lady I am at heart. I get to help a fabulous organisation and get loads of cat cuddles."
